Safety Tips
What you can do to protect yourself:

Before a fight...

Put some money away in a safe place where it will not be found; at work, in a safe or with someone you can trust. Even if you only save a little bit every week, you need to have some money of your own.

Make copies of important papers (birth certificates, marriage license, social security, bank account numbers, legal documents, medication, health cards, insurance information, and food stamps. Leave the documents with a trusted friend, neighbor, coworker, clergy or family member. Have an extra copy of keys hidden and accessible.

When A fight starts....

Move away from the kitchen, bathroom or any place where there are dangerous objects.

Plan the easiest escape. Decide on a door or window to exit quickly and safely.

Find a neighbor, friend or family member you can trust to help you and your children, to call police.

Stay Safe on your Own...
- Have outside lighting (flood light, sensor light)

Change the locks on your doors, get bolt locks.

Learn about your legal rights. If you have any legal papers to protect you, keep them with you at all times.

Tell neighbors, friends, landlords or coworkers that your partner no longer lives with you. Keep a safety plan for coming and going, and share it with people that you trust.

Teach your children how to dial 911

Checklist - Important Things to Take When You Leave

If you have an Order of Protection In a work setting:

Tell your supervisor, Human Resource and Security.

Give administration a copy of the order and a picture to identify the partner.

Keep a copy of the protection order with you at all time.

Call 911 immediately any time the order is violated.

Notify administration if you receive threatening calls, emails, faxes or if you are being stalked.
- Change your route to or from work.
- Ask for an escort to and from your car.
- Utilize your Employee Assistance Program (if available) for ongoing confidential support in the work setting.
